This is MY take on US Skins
On Monday night MTV brought out the potenitally big show called “skins” an American remake of the controversial British series of the same name. Already in its fifth Season in the UK. Created by Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain.
In the early years of skins what captured the audience was the sex, drugs, and the language of the everyday teenagers. Five years later on it has been less of a controversy but also not quite as edgy as the first series of skins.
If you have already seen the British version of skins the first episode that was aired on MTV may not have been anyyhing new. You are introduced by the High school hottie Tony (james Newman) full of confidence, charming, the guy who knows his way around. His best friend, Stanley (Daniel Flaherty) a desperate virign seeking to lose his virginity, whose secretly in love with his tony’s girlfriend, Michelle (Rachel Thevenard) who is also one of the high school hotties.
Other major characters include Tea (Sofia Black-D’Ellia) a girl who is open about her lesbian sexuality with her friends but not her family; Chris (Jesse Carere) a fun loving, optimistic guy who has an addiction to drugs and sex; Abbud(Ron Mustafaa) A muslim who is his parents would not accept his lfie stye sex, drugs, and rock and roll; and Cadie(Britne Oldford) a girl that does not say much, she is like a withering flower as she gets in and out of rehab for issue with drugs.
While the US Skins has adopted some elements from the UK version. The American show makes a stand that they will move away from the UK roots and fill in their own original material. There has been some changes in the US to UK version. Chracter names like stanley is replaced for sid, cadie is effy, abbud is anwar, and the chracter maxxie the proud gay is gone.
I feel like it is Unfair to compare the casts of the British and american “skins”. They are not two completely different shows but are similar. In the U.S Tv shows can only show so much nudity and profanity. That is probably the only thing that the U.S Skins lack and a lot of people have commented about this. If you are ranting about how bad the show is because there is no profanity or nudity then you are not engaging in the show. Aside from the edgy UK “skins” if you are to view this as a show of its own and not as a “Ripoff” from what people have said. The show is really not bad at all.
Skins is a show that you do not want to miss out on. It can be a breath of fresh air for some or disaster for others. But this show that is filled with sex, drugs, music will have viewers wanting more. But beneath all that the skins chracters are all trying to figure out who they are. They are teens just living their life and the more we learn about these kids the more emotional their stories become.
